Natural/Organic Brands Against GMO Labels

Taken from the avoiding corn forum:

Natural/Organic Brands Against GMO Labels

Companies who oppose our right to know what we are eating, and the ones who support our rights.

See chart on this website:

What's that smell? GMO flavors and fragrances from yeast being developed:

No consensus on the safety of GMOs. Many experts very concerned that they are not safe.

Pass this information on to other people who are concerned about GMOs and other hazards.

Testing Tuna

Today I am testing Wild Planet Tuna, salt free.  I actually started yesterday, and today so far, have no reaction.  If everything goes well, then I will have a new source of protein, which is great for me, since I can't eat red meat anymore.

There's nothing like a steak, salt and pepper and well done, but I swell up when I eat them now.  It's probably the stuff the slaughterhouse uses to process it, antibacterial wash or even ammonia... yeeks!

If I could get a safe source, where it's processed with hot water only, I would be so happy, but all these chemicals, mostly derived from some sort of corn, just kill me, slowly, so it's a no-no for me now.

Hopefully the tuna will pass the test.

What I've Been Up To... Crochet Afghan

I think I will add this afghan to the Heritage Chest, and make 2 more, one for each of my children's future baby.  Thanks for peeking in.

I've been busy here, trying to make it through each day as best as I can, and searching to alternatives to foods I used to eat.  Today I bought something called quinoa flakes, and am hoping it will serve me instead of cream of wheat, which I'm unable to find unless it's "corn-taminated."  Sigh.  Why is corn in everything?  A friend said it right when she stated that "Corn allergy is very much like any other allergy EXCEPT THAT CORN IS OVERUSED IN OUR SOCIETY." And THAT is what is happening to those of us who suffer from this allergy, which, by the way, is not a rare allergy as we've been (mis)informed.  It so happens it's an allergy that is underdiagnosed.

Corn-free Girls Can Cook, Too

So I've been searching around for recipes that are corn free and decided to try this one:

http://mennonitegirlscancook.blogspot.com/2010/02/economical-coffee-cake.html

Changes for myself:

1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
Whole wheat pastry flour

Topping:
1/3 cup of white sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.

I started to feel just awful right before add the wet ingredients to the dry ones and the family sent me to the room, turned the air conditioner on, and I had to recline here.  So, Honorable Son #2 and a friend of his, along with Delicate Flower, finished preparing the cake.  I was able to take it out of the oven, though.

It's good.

Not as moist as I would like, so next time I will add a little more butter to the recipe and find some safe brown sugar for the topping.  I don't know if I will dare use apples, since they are so full of pesticides and corn-based wax.

I don't react as terribly or violently to corn as some people I am acquainted with over the internet, but ingesting corn or corn-derived products make me ill.  So, I'll have to think hard about the apples.  Maybe a mango topping or fresh pineapple would be nice or better yet, pineapple upside-down cake!!!

thumbs up YES!!! thumbs up

I know some Walgreens do compounds, but most do not. Even if they say they do, they don't do the type of compounding that you would need done for corn-free.
From the corn-free list (http:corn-freefoods.blogspot.com)
Compounding Pharmacy Locator: http://www.iacprx.org Go to “Patients/Pets” on the sidebar, click on “Finding a Compounding Pharmacist”
Each state has its own little rules for scripts, but basically scripts need:
drug name (for compounding, the generic name may be preferred)
amount of drug per dose/pill (ex. 25 mg)
directions on how to take it - twice a day, once a day, as needed...
quantity of drug to release at a time (50 pills)
Refills (number of refills)

In addition to the dosage mine writes corn free gluten free and preservative free on the prescription. But everyone is correct my compounding pharmacist spoke with my Doctor to explain what I needed and how they would accomplish it. Even after all these years they still need to chat every once in awhile.

Corn-Free Shortbread Cookies

2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon sea salt (crushed)

Sift together.

2 sticks of saltless butter, room temperature
3/4 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 cup sugar cane sugar

Heat oven to 350ºF.  Mix together.  Sprinkle some extra sea salt over this mixture to make up for the lack of salt in the butter.  Add the dry ingredients, 1/3 at a time, to the wet ingredients.  Mix together.  Separate dough into small balls and either press with the palm of your hand or make shapes with a cookie cutter.  Put the unused part into the refrigerator while the other cookies are in the oven.  Take out when the edges are golden brown.

Enjoy!
