Well, one of them, at any rate. This one was done with half double crochets, much like my crocheted Boston Scarf. I like the idea of finishing with a half double crochet border all around, even around the foundation chain stitch row because it looks more "finished" and there are less ends to weave in later on.
I would do one thing different, though. I would have made the foundation chain stitches a bit looses, since the scarf has a sort of curve, but you can't make it out from a distance of 100 miles, so I'm not going to worry about it.
One thing that I noticed is that half double crochets are hard on tendons. You have to make make one longer movement with your wrist in order to pull the yarn through all the loops on your hook, as opposed to two swift movements if it's a double crochet stitch. This is something I have been studying for a while, and am developing my own way of positioning my hands in such a way to reduce stress on my wrists as I crochet.
I hope to show this more clearly with a video soon.

What a pretty scarf! I like the "airiness" to it so it can be pulled up over the mouth and nose when it is really cold, but it's still easy to breathe through it. Very nice!
