Another Crochet Granny Shawl

This one is for my mother-in-law.  I used a single crochet row every 8 rows, thinking that I was going to simply add fringe, but opted for the shell border instead.  Now I am not happy with the single crochet rows.  Next time I make a granny shawl with a shell border, it will be a plain granny  pattern, no sc's.  It seems to take away from the pretty border.

If, on the other hand (WHAT other hand?!?) I decide to use fringe, then yes, either plain granny pattern or with a single crochet row every few rows will look good and not detract from the whole piece.

Thank you for looking.

I like the occasional sc rows. It give the shawl a custom look... I like the shell edging, too. Fringe might get caught in things, and the older one gets, the more likely that caught fringe may cause an accident.
It is lovely!

I think it came out very lovely. I like the shell stitch border. The last triangular shawl I made had a shell and picot stitch border. I've been getting away from using fringes these days, although sometimes things just seem to call for fringes.

That's beautiful. I'm so glad the MIL liked it. I think the sc rows just give the piece a unique look that set it apart from the average granny shawl. I like that you didn't put fringe on. How you detest pineapples is the same way I feel about fringe (Cringe!!!) :)

I like the rows of SC, it sets off the pattern rows, making it look more 'dressy'.

I love it...I know what you mean about the sc detail, but it is still a great shawl and it is no wonder she liked it. I certainly would (hmm...but so would our darling Paris who takes all projects as hers...cats...whatcha gonna do!?)

I know what you mean about the sc taking away from the shell edging, but it's still a great looking shawl. Good job!!

I love it just the way it is & am glad you MIL does too! :) Since its all one color, I think the sc row just gives it that extra little something. Visual texture maybe? :) It all goes together VERY nicely! Great job!

I agree with everyone who likes the sc rows, with or without fringe. It would be just too plain without them. I'd call the sc rows an enhancement rather than a detraction. It's beautiful as is!!

It's wonderful! The great thing about crochet is we can add or delete an element at our choosing. Great job.

River, the shawl turned out beautiful! Would you share your pattern? I tried looking at yours yesterday and working by your 1/2 granny instructions but then couldn't figure out the sc. row and then starting back to the granny stitch. LOL,I've been crocheting for 40 years!

Thank you for telling the story of 3 Kings day. I never knew.

Dear Liz,

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. When you decide to do a single crochet row, Chain 1, 2 single crochet in the same stitch and in each stitch until you reach the bottom corner. Work 2 single crochet, chain 2, 2 single crochet in that space, then single crochet up to the last corner, where you will end with 2 single crochet in the last stitch.

Start your new row with a Chain 3, and do 2 dc in the same stitch, skip 2 sc, work a shell in the next stitch, skip 2 single crochet, on to the bottom corner, make a Corner (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc) in that space, skip 2 single crochet, and work your way in this manner until you reach the last stitch.

Finish this new row by making 3 double crochet in the last stitch. chain 3, turn, and continue as you had previously before the single crochet row.

Let me know if this helps you. If not, I'll figure out a way of explaining it better.
