Once Upon a Shawl...

Once upon a time, a crochetster saw a picture...
and thought it would make A Lovely Shawl for her Fearless Boss's dear Mother. So she went to a store and bought 3 of these...
with her hard-earned money. She immediately started to crochet the shawl, putting lots of love and prayers and good wishes into every stitch. This is what it started to look like:
Lots of other crochetsters saw it and encouraged her to finish it, in spite of the difficulties of the instructions of the pattern, so she continued, all the time imagining a sweet old lady with a beautiful shawl around her shoulders, keeping her warm during the cold harsh New York winter. Fearless Boss liked it too, saying it was beautiful. But...

One day, she realized that the beautiful shawl, although indeed beautiful, was not practical at all... It was too narrow around the neckline and would probably fall off the sweet old lady's shoulders all the time. Which meant that, instead of being A Lovely Shawl, it would become a Nuisance. So Faithful Assistant decided to unravel the pretty-yet-impractical shawl and so it became this:

So, now, her search for A Lovely Shawl is taking her to Lion Brand, where the half-moon shawl is said to be lovely and looks practical. This time she hopes she can finish it...

Oh, Enid! I made that same shawl for my mother's roommate at the nursing home. She is a BIG lady and it goes around her very nicely. I know the neck part looks small, but thats not the only part the fits around the neck....the sides of the shawl come around and drape nicely around the neck and shoulders. I love this shawl SO much that I am making myself one. Dont give up on it...it DOES fit :) And, I agree with you thats its a beautiful pattern!

I'm currently working this. I added more chains to the beginning neck which means more repeats to the pattern due to it's small size originally. I'm also using Jiffy and the rec. hook called for. I'm about half way thru it, so I hope I have enough yarn. We'll see.

Oh shucks... It's already been unraveled and gone to the Great Yarn Ball in the Sky...

Oh, Enid! I'm sorry you gave up on it. I've made 2 since you posted the pattern source the first time. Both turned out lovely and fit beautifully. One for a skinny girl, and the other a much fuller figured lady. They both love it. It doesn't slide off the shoulders. In fact, I'm thinking about making myself one, as the pattern I made for me is too short and doesn't come down over my elbows.
Try it again someday. L/Cay
