I Got RACKed!

In case you don't know what RaCK means, it means Random Act of Crochet Kindness. A friend, Kristen, from New Hampshire, USA, sent me this yarn. Thanks, dearie! That was sweet of you! :)

Unfortunately, it contains wool, which makes me itchy! I'm going to have to give this away.

It says:

di.Vé®
Vergnasco Italy
88% Wool
12% Polyester

Me regalaron este hilo y no lo puedo usar... Contiene un 88% de lana, y, desgraciadamente, my da alergia. Tendré que regalarlo... ¡Qué lástima!

New Simple Vest

It isn't exactly *new*... *smiles* Prissy, my husband's niece, for whom I originally made the Simple Vest, outgrew it, and wanted a new one, but didn't dare ask. I made it anyway, out of pink Bernat Softee yarn. It's VERY soft! I made it along the same principals I made the original one, too. I almost trimmed it with fuzzy yarn, but it just didn't look right. It was the perfect color, too.

Ambar's Simple Vest

Ambar's Simple Vest

© 2003 by Ambar E. Rivera

This vest is a child's size 5 Materials:

Size G hook, worsted weight yarn
2 conches
1 pack of leather shoe laces
2 pony beads

Note: Instructions for making this vest in your own size are at the bottom. I made this vest using double crochet stitches. Using the guidelines at the bottom, I'm sure you can make it with other stitches, like single crochet, or clusters, etc. You could alternate rows, too, like one double crochet row, one single crochet row.

Front Right

Row 1- Chain 29. (right side) Double crochet in second (not 3rd) chain from hook, and in each chain stitch. The 2 chains you skipped count as the first double crochet. 28 double crochets.

Row 2-13- Chain 2, turn, (Counts as 1st double crochet, now and throughout). Turn. Double crochet in each double crochet.

Row 14- Chain 1, turn, single crochet in first 4 stitches, half double crochet in next stitch, double crochet in remaining stitches.

Row 15- Double crochet in each double crochet. Do not work remaining stitches. 22 stitches

Row 16- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 20 stitches. Leave chain 2 from previous row unworked. 21 stitches.

Row 17- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 18 stitches. 19 stitches.

Row 18- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 17 stitches. 18 stitches.

Row 19- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 16 stitches. 17 stitches.

Row 20- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 15 stitches. 16 stitches.

Row 21- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 14 stitches. 15 stitches.

Row 22- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 9 stitches, make a double crochet decrease, double crochet in next stitch. 13 stitches.

Row 23- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 11 stitches. 12 stitches. Cut off yarn, leaving a 4-5 inch tail for sewing to back.

Front Left:

Row 1- Chain 29. (right side) Double crochet in second (not 3rd) chain from hook, and in each chain stitch. The 2 chains you skipped count as the first double crochet. 28 double crochets.

Row 2-13- Chain 2 (Counts as 1st double crochet, now and throughout). Turn. Double crochet in each double crochet.

Row 14- Chain 1, double crochet in the next 22 stitches, half double crochet in next stitch, single crochet in last 4 stitches.

Row 15- Chain 1, slip stitch in next 5 stitches, chain 2, double crochet in remaining double crochets. 22 stitches

Row 16- [IMPORTANT NOTE= From now until end of this section, you will leave all Chain 2 of previous row unworked. This is how the decreases will be made.] Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 20 stitches. Leave chain 2 from previous row unworked. 21 stitches.

Row 17- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 18 stitches. 19 stitches.

Row 18- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 17 stitches. 18 stitches.

Row 19- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 16 stitches. 17 stitches.

Row 20- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 15 stitches. 16 stitches.

Row 21- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 14 stitches. 15 stitches.

Row 22- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 9 stitches, make 1 double crochet decrease , double crochet in next stitch. 13 stitches.

Row 23- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in next 11 stitches. 12 stitches. Cut off yarn, leaving a 4-5 inch tail for sewing to back.

BACK:

Row 1- Chain 58 (just like the total number of chains in the front) [Right side!] Double crochet in 2nd chain from hook and each chain.

Row 2-13 Chain 2, turn, double crochet in each double crochet and in each chain 2.

Row 14- Chain 1, turn, single crochet in 1st 5 stitches, half double crochet in next, double crochet in next 44 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch, single crochet in next 5 stitches.

Row 15- Slip stitch in next 6 stitches, chain 2, double crochet in next double crochet and all other double crochets of row. IMP!! Leave remaining half double and single crochet UNWORKED.

Row 16- 21- Chain 2, turn, double crochet in remaing double crochets. Do not double crochet in any of the chain 2. This will make for the decreases.

Row 22- [LEFT UPPER BACK] Double crochet in next 13 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch.

Row 23- Chain 2, turn. Half double crochet in next stitch, double crochet in remaining stitches until end of row, half double crochet in last stitch of upper back. Do not work chain 2 stitch. Fastern off, leaving a 4 inch tail and weave in.

Row 22- [RIGHT UPPER BACK] Skip next 9 stitches of row 21, attach yarn with a slip stitch and chain 2, and work same as Row 23 of LEFT UPPER BACK.

Row 23- Chain 2, turn. Half double crochet in next stitch, double crochet in remaining stitches until end of row, half double crochet in last stitch of upper right back. Do not work chain 2 stitch. Fastern off, leaving a 4 inch tail and weave in.

FINISHING:

Whip stitch shoulder with back. Weave in ends. Attach yarn to any chain stitch on bottom, single crochet all around, working in each corner 2 single crochets. Attach the conches in front (I did it in rows 13 of the fronts) and use a pony bead to secure the leather strap. Cut the strap. Tie sides together with another lace. NOTE: Do NOT sew sides together. (unless you *want to!*)

~~~~~~
Important Note: This vest is for a child, size 5. You can adapt this to any size. Yes, I mean any size! Just use a shirt or sweater or vest you already own, starting with the Front Right, make as many chains as you need to get from your side to the middle of your torso. Note the number, because you're going to need it later on for the Left Front and Back.
Start making double crochets in each row, using chain 2 instead of chain 3 (so it won't make holes). Continue working in rows until you reach 2-3 inches from your under arm. Then notice how from Rows 14 and on there are decreases. Follow the instructions, only make the front as wide as you need it. End in the same way each of the decreasing rows end, for as many rows are you need.
For the Left Front, note the way it starts, just like the Right Front. The decreasing row is the same as Left Front, only with the same number of rows you used for the Right front, so make note of how many rows from botton of the vest until you're going to start to decrease. Then note how many decrease rows and repeat this for the Left Front.
For the back, you'll use twice as many chains as the front. In this case, 29 * 2= 58. Just double what you used in the starting chain of the Right Front. Chain 2, double crochet in each chain and in each chain 2. How many rows did you make before the first decrease in the front? That's the number you'll be using for the back. Notice how it's decreased in the back and follow the same instructions. Compare your work with the T shirt or vest or dress you're using to guide you. Start your decreasing with single crochets, a few of them, maybe 4 maybe 5, whatever your preference. Just make sure you write it down, so that the other side is exactly the same. Do the decreasing rows, just the beginning and end, the same as in the Back of this pattern.
Finally, whip stitch the shoulders together and even the sides, if you want. If not, then tie them together with the leather shoe laces and cut to the length you prefer.
I hope this helps you! If you think about it, you're just making double crochet rows back and forth and then just using some smaller stitches to give it a nice form towards the top. You can do it!
The Original Half Granny Square Pattern
Half Granny Square Instructions (Also known as the Granny Triangle)
© 2002 by Ambar E. Rivera
This is the original pattern, with MY instructions, that I wrote out myself.  Please do not post to any other web page. You may make one copy for your personal use only. This is great for a shawl, for completing a square, and for covering up your hair.  :)
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn and a size J hook, or any other weight and hook to suit your needs.
Shell = 3 double crochet in space indicated.
Corner = Shell, chain 2, shell in Chain-2 space.
Directions:
Chain 4.
Slip stitch in first chain to form a circle.
ROUND 1- Chain 3, make 3 double crochet in the ring, chain 2, then four more double crochet. CHAIN 3 and turn.
ROUND 2- Make 3 double crochet IN BETWEEN the first and second double crochet of the previous row. Skip three double crochet, work in your chain 2 space the following: (Shell, chain 2, Shell), SKIP NEXT 3 double crochet, make 4 double crochet in the space BETWEEN the 3rd AND 4TH double crochet. Chain 3 and turn.
[Add a shell right where the pen is, between the 1st and 2nd double crochet.]
ROUND 3- Make 3 double crochet in space between first and second stitches, skip 3 double crochet, make a shell in the space between double crochets, skip 3 more double crochet, and work in your Chain-2 space the following: (Shell, chain 2, Shell). Skip next 3 double crochet, shell in space between double crochet,, skip next 3 double crochet, shell + 1 double crochet in same space. Chain 3 and turn.
ROUND 4- Skipping 1st double crochet, shell in space between double crochets. Work (*skip next shell, make shell in next space between shells*) until you reach the Chain-2 space, then repeat from * to * until you get to the lastshell+1 group. Skip first 3 double crochet, then shell in between this and the last double crochet. Skip next 3 double crochet, shell + 1 double crochet in same space. Chain 3 and turn.
You will now notice a pattern forming, where the beginning of each round starts with a group of 4 double crochet, and you make your familiar groups of 3 dc (double crochet) as in a basic granny square.
Continue working in established pattern until you finish the triangle you want. You can make a shawl if you use about 14 ounces of worsted weight yarn, including fringe. Or make a pretty edge to it. Anyway, you now know how to make a granny triangle! :o)
Special Stitches:
Beginning Cluster Stitch= Chain 2, YO and insert hook into space or stitch and pull up a loop, YO and pull through FIRST two loops on hook; (YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through first two loops only) 3 times, YO and pull through all 5 loops on your hook.
Cluster Stitch= (YO and pull up a loop from space or stitch indicated, YO and pull through first two loops only) 5 times, YO and pull through all 6 loops on your hook.
Solid Square:
Using a G hook and worsted weight yarn, chain 4 and slip stitch into first chain for form a ring.
Round 1- Make a beginning cluster, chain 3, (make a cluster, chain 3)3 times. Slip stitch into first cluster to join. 4 clusters and 4 chain2 spaces.
Round 2- Slip stitch to next Chain 2 space, Slip Stitch again in same space, Chain 2, 2 double crochet in same space, chain 1, (3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 more double crochet in next corner space, chain 1) 3 times; in last space, make 3 double crochet, chain 1 then single crochet in first double crochet (your chain 2 which counts as the first double crochet).
Round 3 and next rounds- Follow the instructions for Making a Basic Granny Square (go to Round 3) until desired size is achieved. Do not finish with a round of double crochets all around.
~~~

Colored Flowered Square

Color A= Pink
Color B= Green
Color C= White

When you make the colored square, start as with the solid square, only finish off color A after Round 1, cut a 4 inch length and weave in ends.
Attach new color with a slip stitch at the beginning of Round 2 in a space.
Follow the instructions for Round 2. Finish off Color 2 at the end of Round 2. Weave in ends.
Attach Color C at the beginning of Round 3 in a corner space. Continue Making a Basic Granny Square (go to Round 3) pattern until end of square.

Tips:
When you make your first cluster, make sure your first loop is a little bit tight. The other loops do not need to be tight at all. That way, your clusters will look more like petals and less like just a group of double crochets.

After you finish each cluster, grab your ring and gently pull your cluster to the right side (left, if you're a lefty) so you'll have space to make the other clusters.

The Lord is my Shepherd;
I shall not have any wants.

Mini Meat Loaves

This is MY recipe, so bear in mind that, being Puerto Rican, and living in Puerto Rico, it's going to be very savory!!!

Ambar Enid's Mini Stove Meatloaves

Ingredients:

For the Meat
1 pound of lean ground beef
dried oregano leaves
1 slice of bread (either white or whole wheat), crumbled
1 tablespoon aprox. of water
1/2 teaspoon salt
dash of pepper (optional)
onion, shaved (instead of slicing, try slicing very thin so it's almost like shaving. get a couple of these)

Starting with the bread, add salt, pepper, oregano and 1/2 of the water. Mix. If it doesn't mix well, add more water until all is very blended. Add the beef and mix. Make into mini loaves, like hot dog buns. Put into the saucepan on medium and cover while you gather the sauce ingredients.

For the Sauce

1 small can of tomato paste (about as high as an pointing finger)
1 small tomato, diced (optional)
1/2 to 1 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
1 fistfull of coriander leaves or 2 long recao leaves
1 small onion, cut into rings
1 small green pepper, cut into rings
2 garlic cloves (or less, if you don't like a lot), crushed
[Optional: 1 tablespoon (or less) olive oil or extra virgen olive oil.]
6-8 salad olives
Water

The olive oil is optional. If you wish to prepare the sauce in another pan and then add to the mini loaves, then saute the onions, green peppers (about 4 slices, and freeze the rest for some other day), salt and pepper until the onion is translucent. Slowly add about 1 cup of water and add the whole can of tomato paste. Mix well and add to meat mixture. By now the meat is probably half done, so add the garlic and the coriander or recao leaves, and diced tomatoes, olives, and cover until the meat is done.

Serve with either mashed potatoes or boiled white rice. You can also have stewed beans with this dish and slices of avocado (thin) or green salad. Make sure it's something green since the rest is white (rice) and red (meat loaf), so you want it to look nice with a green color to it.

Hope you all enjoy this!

I put this in my links over in Multiply.com , but this singer's lyrics are so good, I have to share it here. Go to his My Space and check it out. Listen carefully to the lyrics... Very good!

Yvi's Blue Picot Scrunchy - Crochet

Seems like NO ONE ever goes to this page except for me... Most of my other patterns receive attention, and this one might be lonely... silly me! I made this especially for my husband's niece.

So, here is Yvi's Blue Picot Scrunchy.

What I'm Working On...

I'm not *really* working on this... it just happens, if you know what I mean. One feels the need to keep ones hands busy... We feel we can't be idle, now, can we? So, when I'm not doing anything and just sitting close to my husband while he watches a race or a game, I grab a jean tote I have and make another Serious Granny Square.

I haven't written down the pattern yet... I did start though, once...Maybe I'll get around to it when I do the next square. I get tired of plain granny squares, don't want to make solid ones. So, I make my serious ones... I think they look a little bit more elegant than a granny square.

So, I'm using up my left-over yarn which I find around my room in the weirdest places! and make up a square. I'll probably send it to Soldier's Angels.

Doily in a Ring

This is a doily that my aunt gave me... Her name is Petra. When she married a Dutch man, someone from his family gave this to her, and now I have it. I'm the only one of her family who crochets, and can appreciate the work that went into it.

When we stayed at her house two summers ago, I saw it and admired it, it was such a lovely and curious thing. I'd never seen a doily put into a ring like this. She told me that someone from the Netherlands gave it to her, and this must have been about 40 years ago. I thought it was a treasure and she impulsively gave it to me. This is something I'll give to my own daughter when she marries.

Happy Three Kings Day!

So, this is a gift I received from my daughter today. Three Kings Day is traditionally a holiday for children, but she decided to give me something... I'm keeping that kid!
